Heaven and Earth Shall Pass Away

"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." (Matthew 24:35).

It has been generally believed that Jesus here meant that even though these physical heavens and earth will pass away some day, that is not true about His word which will never pass away. Whether this physical earth and solar system ever passes away is not the point in this chapter. There is more to this statement of Jesus than meets the eye. Jesus has been talking in apocalyptic language, and heaven and earth passing away could mean here just what He has been talking about - that the heaven and earth of the old Jewish order will pass away, and that His word concerning all this is sure to come to pass.

    I believe that the author of these words meant them literally, that he knew, as scientists know today, that all things pass away; and that the LOGOI which would not pass away - are the logics of things - the logics of how things have worked, of how they do work, and of how they always will work.

For most early Christians from the NT era onward, the law of Moses was in some respects obsolete, and hence no longer binding, at least not in the same manner as it was before the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ (Melito).  To read the vast sweep of Torah regulations as if they were all still to be carried out literally was to commit a—or perhaps even the—capital hermeneutical error, inasmuch as to do so would be a failure to grasp the pivotal significance of the paschal event, and its aftershock, the destruction of the temple in 70 CE, for the divine economy of salvation.  Patristic authors were also inclined to underline both the limited aims and the limited efficacy of the law’s pedagogy.
